Elite defense of higher education is insulting, unrealistic

To the editor: As a retired teacher I have a diverse viewpoint than the letter writers who defended the modern process of increased training. I come from a loved ones of educators, so there is no problem about how a great deal I value education and learning.

There appeared to be no acknowledgement of truth in the letters. There ended up dismissive references to “tracking” and that just having a first rate work was not adequate, which is rather insulting to the masses that are cozy and contented with building a residing that enables them to experience productive.

Most college students who aspire to greater training have the general public or non-public sources at their disposal to assistance them. Unfortunately, some students do not have households or households supportive of their aspirations.

What if all those who did not make it experienced been supplied a alternative to get technological coaching due to the fact there had been classes in significant school that exposed them to distinctive trade capabilities? The capacity to do the job in a expert trade does not instantly classify you as a non-pondering, uninformed, non-discerning individual.

The attitudes expressed in these letters were being elitist and unrealistic. Our general public faculties technique should provide every person the likelihood to do well.

Marty Wilson, Whittier

To the editor: I examine the letters that defended college or university, and not 1 is linked to actuality. For the 28 many years of my training, practically 40% of my young ones experienced no fascination in faculty, but fairly in vocational arts, and I encouraged them just about every step of the way.

Get over the arrogance that college is the only way, and get started appreciating your plumber, contractor or mechanic.

Sandy Mishodek, Working Springs, Calif.

To the editor: I am an fantastic instance of an individual who didn’t know what I required to do immediately after substantial school. I went to local community higher education right before transferring to UCLA and acquired a degree that afforded me zero support in acquiring a position.

I went back again to group higher education to turn out to be a registered nurse. When I graduated in my late 20s I was provided a job straight away. Together the way I had many work opportunities to pay back the lease and found the man or woman into whom I hoped to develop when I grew more mature.

The people today you fulfill and mingle with together the way enable type the human being you come to be. If you are with persons who strive for better points — say, a home and economic safety — or who are activists, you could decide that is a little something you want far too. What these have in prevalent is that there is hard function involved.

There are people who have degrees and wait for careers to tumble into their laps. So, whatever your schooling stage, get your hands filthy and give up whining.
